Making the Connection

Plaid, micro-deposits, and how financial institutions link together.

September 16, 2026

Why This Matters

You found a great account. Now can you actually connect it?

That is where the real test begins.

An account can have a strong APY, a clean app, and all the right marketing language. None of that tells you how easily it will connect to the rest of your banking setup.

Can you add outside accounts? Can you move money in and out without drama? Can another institution find it? Can this institution find the others?

Connecting accounts is part of the product.
If an institution does not connect well, that limitation becomes part of your daily banking life.

Some institutions connect easily. Some connect only one way. Some do not connect the way you need at all.

The Easy Button

Plaid made account linking faster. It did not make every problem disappear.

Plaid and similar services were built to make linking financial accounts easier.

Instead of typing in a routing number and account number, waiting for small test deposits, and coming back later to verify them, you may be able to choose your institution, log in, approve access, and be done in a couple of minutes.

What Plaid is good at

Speed, convenience, and quick setup when both institutions support the connection well.

What Plaid does not guarantee

That every institution will be visible, that every connection will work both ways, or that it will fit every banking setup.

Plaid can make linking easier. Easier does not necessarily mean better.

When it works, it is wonderful.

But BankCraft is not interested only in what works when everything lines up nicely. BankCraft is interested in what happens when one institution fits awkwardly into the system, one connection works only one direction, or one bank simply cannot be found.

The Old Way Still Matters

Micro-deposits may be slower, but they can be remarkably powerful.

Traditional micro-deposit verification is the old-fashioned route.

You provide the routing number and account number. The institution sends one or two small test deposits. You verify them, and the link is established.

Why this still matters

If two institutions support manual linking and micro-deposit verification, you may be able to create a connection even when an instant-linking service cannot find the institution at all.

It is slower.

It is not flashy.

But it often gives you flexibility that the easy button does not.

Fast is nice.
Flexible is powerful.

A Crucial Distinction

Using Plaid is not the same thing as being discoverable through Plaid.

This is where people get tripped up.

An institution may let you use Plaid from inside its own website or app to find and connect outside institutions.

That does not automatically mean that same institution will appear when another bank or credit union uses Plaid to search for it.

BankCraft terms

Plaid discoverable: another institution can find this account through Plaid.

Plaid outbound linking: this institution can use Plaid to find and connect to other institutions.

Two-way Plaid: both directions work.

One-way Plaid: only one direction works.

“Uses Plaid” and “can be found in Plaid” are not the same thing.

What We Saw

Real-world BankCraft observations

A snapshot, not a directory

The institutions below are based on what BankCraft personally tested or observed as of September 16, 2026.

Plaid connections and institution configurations can change. Availability may also depend on which institution or service is initiating the connection.

Use this as a field report of what we found, not as a permanently maintained Plaid compatibility directory.

As of September 16, 2026, these institutions have been discoverable through Plaid during our testing:

  • ValorFI Heroes
  • Vibrant Credit Union
  • Navy Federal Credit Union
  • Abound Credit Union
  • Axos Bank
  • Alliant Credit Union
  • Vio Bank
  • Live Oak Bank
  • Pen Air Credit Union

Through Plaid connections used elsewhere, we have also observed these institutions or accounts appear:

  • Charles Schwab
  • Fidelity
  • Elan Cardmember Services
  • PNC credit card accounts

One-way examples from our testing

During our testing through September 16, 2026, Always.bank and EleVault behaved as one-way Plaid institutions.

Both could use Plaid from inside their own systems to find and link other institutions, but neither appeared when we tried to find them through Plaid from the other direction.

That is not a theoretical distinction.

It affects how you build routes, how you choose a bridge institution, and how much control you really have over moving money between accounts.

Privacy and Comfort Level

Some people love instant linking. Some do not.

Part of the hesitation some people feel is not about speed. It is about comfort.

With traditional micro-deposits, you are usually providing routing and account information and proving that you control the account.

With instant-linking services, the process may involve logging in through a third-party interface or approving an authorization flow that gives a service access to account information.

BankCraft point

Some people are completely comfortable with instant linking. Others prefer the older manual route. The important thing is having a choice.

An institution that offers both instant linking and traditional micro-deposit verification is giving you options.

Practical Questions

What should you ask before opening the account?

If connection flexibility matters to you, ask directly:

  • How do you link external accounts, Plaid, micro-deposits, or something else?
  • Do you support both instant linking and traditional manual verification?
  • How many outside accounts can I link?
  • Can I initiate both ACH pushes and pulls?
  • Are there limits on external transfers?
  • Do you allow scheduled transfers?
  • Are there holds on newly linked accounts or newly deposited funds?

Those answers tell you a lot about how well the institution may fit into your existing banking system.

Do not assume a beautiful rate means a beautiful connection.
Ask how the plumbing works.

Keep Learning

The connection is only part of the route.

Building Bridges

Learn how one well-connected institution can create routes between financial institutions that cannot connect directly.

Moving Money

Go deeper into ACH transfers, pushes, pulls, limits, holds, and how money actually travels between accounts.

Account Access

A connection is useful only if you can reliably get into the institution and manage the account when you need it.

The Lesson

What BankCraft wants you to remember

Plaid is not the enemy.

Micro-deposits are not outdated junk.

Manual linking is not glamorous.

Each method has a place.

The real goal is not to worship a method.

The goal is to understand how accounts connect, where the weak spots are, and which institutions give you the most control.

BankCraft Protocol

Making the Connection

Learn the linking method before you need it. Ask whether the institution uses Plaid, micro-deposits, manual verification, or some combination of those methods.

Separate convenience from flexibility. Instant linking is fast. Traditional verification can reach places instant linking cannot.

Test both directions when it matters. An institution may use Plaid outward but still not be discoverable through Plaid from somewhere else.

Value choice. The best institutions are often the ones that give you more than one way to connect.

Account-linking methods, external transfer tools, Plaid availability, manual verification options, and transfer limits vary by institution and can change over time. Verify current functionality directly with the financial institution before relying on it as part of an important transfer route.
